Head Over Heels!

Friday marked Style Junkie's monthly Head Over Heels event. Always a fun time, I got to catch up with the owner, Andrea for bit (this lady has big plans ahead)and I picked out an uber cute necklace that I rocked the next night while out with friends (sorry, no pictures; too much debauchery took place to document ;D)). Nikki from Nikki T Fashions was also on deck with a few pieces for shoppers to try on. Special discounts were available to those in attendance, with a portion of the night's proceeds donated to Girls Inc.

Ladies, be warned: if you visit their website or have an appointment with them, buy whatever you like at that moment. Do NOT wait! Their sizes are limited and you might miss out on that hot piece that would’ve been perfect for you!

Be sure to visit them at 639 Marshall Ave, Memphis TN 38103 or contact their style team at 901-270-8633. Hopefully I’ll see you at the next event! ~KT

Nature Break

Last week I decided to take a mental day and spend some time at Memphis Botanic Gardens. The last time I’d visited was years ago for a work event so this was my first time actually getting a chance to stroll around the grounds. While it was a VERY warm and humid day (welcome to summer in Memphis lol), it was probably one of my most relaxing walks. Over 96 acres of sweeping vistas, MBG is made up of lakes and woodlands, display gardens and the renowned Japanese Garden (where I spent the most time) & Sensory Garden. There’s a quoi pond, lake, and a children’s exhibit where kids can run around and play house while also learning a bit about horticulture.

If you ever need to get away and just walk, or hang with friends and have a picnic, check out MBG. Admission is only $5 for adults ($3 for kids 3-12, free for those under 2) and it’s an easy and safe way to enjoy nature, because sometimes, that’s all you need!

Escape from the Asylum: Pure Dopeness

Saturday, May 15 was the opening reception for Escape From The Asylum, a new exhibit showcasing original work from 5 of Memphis’ most creative artists: Anthony Brown Jr, Jamon Bullock, John Bullock, Patrick Tabor, and Joseph Boyd.

A collection of work including custom footwear, paintings, drawings, illustrations and CG, the theme of the collections was DC Comic’s Batman. I took a moment to talk with John for more information regarding the concept, and he informed me that while they always knew they wanted to do a comic book themed show, initially, the work was going to be centered around Batman & Robin, but the focus shifted to Villains and Heroins. Months in the making, he also hinted that this exhibit could be the beginning of a series for their group (unofficially named “The Legion”). I for one, am ready to see what’s next!

For anyone that’s seen a Batman movie or reads the comics, this exhibit is a MUST because the photos that are posted will not do this work any justice! Limited edition prints are available for sale, with a % of proceeds going to MIFA (notice a theme here guys? While living your dreams, give back to your community).
The Exhibit runs daily through May 29 at the Marshall Arts Gallery located at 639 Marshall Avenue and is open for all ages. Closing night will also mark the announcement of the winners of a contest they are holding for local artists.

For more information on exhibit hours, the contest, and to also find out more information on the artists, please visit their website at http://www.escapefromtheasylum.com/ ~KT

A forecast for fashion

This past Friday I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual Fashion Forecast Benefit Runway Show. Presented by Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Givens at The Cadre Building (Downtown Memphis), the show was created to highlight some of the burgeoning talent from Memphis (such as Patrick Henry, who’s handbag line Philip Greene is BEYOND dope) , while also showcasing stores who carry lines that are on the forefront of fashion (Sneak Peek Memphis, Style Junkie, and Eugene Michaels to name a few).

A portion of the proceeds are donated to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides interview suits, confidence boosts, and career development to low-income women in over 75 cities worldwide, which is an excellent way for the Givens to give back to the community. Fashion with a cause: what could be better? Below are a few photos from the event, but you can visit our website www.ndloop.net to view the rest. Enjoy!~KT
